One of the most beautiful tokens produced in the entire series of Conder Tokens, the Stortford 4 was Matthew Boulton’s personal favorite. He would frequently carry around on his person examples of this token to show friends and business associates the high level of craft and artistry that the Soho Mint was capable of.
This token is part of a larger group of tokens that I recently acquired from Mr. Cory Collins, a collector of mostly Matthew Boulton/Soho Mint tokens and medals. He had bought 36 tokens from both Bill McKivor and Allan Davisson, who had bought them from Timothy Millett in England. Mr. Millett had himself acquired them directly from the estate of Matthew Boulton. This token comes with letters from Bill McKivor, Timothy Millett, and Cory Collins that show the provenance history from the Boulton estate to myself. Bill stated in his letter that Cory was the first collector to own these tokens after being released from the Boulton Family holdings. Great piece of history!
