Although the ancient Aldgate was replaced in the 13th century with one made of stone, the second gate would have to be rebuilt in 1609. The gate shown on the token is the third manifestation of Aldgate and would last until 1766. The gate materials were used to construct the Aldgate house in Bethnal Green.
