Lord George Gordon is mostly known for his association with the Gordon riots of 1780, for which he was arrested for treason. He was defended by his cousin, Thomas Erskine, and released in 1781. He would later convert to Judaism and write a passionate indictment of slavery addressed to the Speaker of the House of Commons. He would die of typhoid fever in Newgate prison while imprisoned for libel in 1793.
